Lets make fibromyalgia visible
Find out more about our campaign to make fibromyalgia more visible, and the people involved.
This project aims to raise awareness of fibromyalgia, an invisible condition, by creating striking images that are visible to anyone that is nearby. We hope these visual shows will make more people aware of what is behind the condition and more importantly be more aware of how prevalent the condition is.
Chronic Pain is known to affect over 2 million Scots, with fibromyalgia making up a significant proportion of this number. It is thought that fibromyalgia could affect more than 3 million people within the UK. Fibromyalgia is an invisible, debilitating, painful condition that can strike anywhere on the body at any time and at present there is no cure and poor treatment options.
Fibromyalgia Action UK is a registered charity run primarily by unpaid volunteers. The majority of volunteers are also fibromyalgia sufferers who work extremely hard, despite their condition, in order to forward the cause of fibromyalgia. FMA UK was established in order to provide information and support to sufferers and their families. In addition, the charity provides medical information for professionals and operates a national helpline.
More Than Fibro was established in 2020, the Founder is Sharon Turnbull. Sharon has lived with Fibromyalgia since 2007 as well as other long-term conditions.
Sharon was made redundant in 2017 and after 16 years in the same job was a little lost about her next career moves so she opted for various voluntary work, the most notable being with Citizens Advice Bureau and a non-profit supporting people with Fibromyalgia.
In 2020 following a battle with mental health Sharon decided to branch out on her own and bring to the Fibro community a service she knows they desperately need.
